Lot description

Gernot Kissel, German 1939-2008 - The Lady in Red; oil on canvas, signed upper left 'G Kissel', 100.8 x 80.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Pieter A. Denus Kunsthandel, The Hague; Private Collection, purchased from the above 26th October 2004 (according to a copy of the original invoice) Note: Kissel showed with Piano Noble Gallery for over seven years. The strong colours and bold lines in Kissel's work are reminiscent of German Expressionism, drawing inspiration from Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Hecke. Kissel seeks to represent women's beauty and dignity in an emotional way. He uses in thumb to work up the surface of the canvas to make the work more physical.
