Lot description
Edward Middleditch, British 1923-1987 - Grazalema, 1962; charcoal on paper, 65 x 93 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Beaux Arts Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); Private Collection, purchased from the above Note: Middleditch was part of a group of young artists that included John Bratby, Derrick Greaves and Jack Smith dubbed 'The Kitchen Sink School' by David Sylvester in 1954 to refer to their social realist style. The artist exhibited with Beaux Arts Gallery, run by the legendary dealer and painter Helen Lessore, from the 1950s. This early work, likely from the 1960s, demonstrates the impact of David Bomberg's landscapes on the artist. Middleditch travelled to Spain with Miles Richmond, a student of Bomberg's, and this trip was to have a significant effect on his work of the era.
