Pieter Wenning, Dutch/South African 1873-1921 - St John's Church, Wynberg; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Wenning', 46.5 x 41 cm Provenance: Private Collection, Cape Town, purchased directly from the Artist and thence by descent Note: the original owner of this work lived near Wynberg where this painted was made. Wenning was one of the most important artists working in South Africa in the early 20th century, arriving in Cape Town in 1905. Wenning worked en plein aire and developed a unique language of modernism called Cape Impressionism, that became highly influential throughout the country.
