Prunella Clough, British 1919-1999 - Untitled abstract; gouache and watercolour on paper, 25 x 22.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: Professor Joseph Rykwert CBE (1926-2018) and thence by descent Note: Rykwert was one of the most important architectural historians and critics of his generation, teaching internationally and writing many influential works including 'The Idea of a Town, 1963', 'On Adam's House in Paradise, 1972' and 'The Seduction of Place, 2000'. Rykwert was a close friend of Clough and the links between her work and his architectural criticism are clear in this work. Discussions with Rykwert were surely a complement to the inspiration of her aunt, Eileen Gray. Clough's highly individual artwork responds simultaneously to the macro and micro, exploring the unseen and overlooked details of the urban and natural world. The present work shows the artist exploring simultaneously geometric, urban and celestial imagery, creating subtle and sensitive forms, that suggest organic matter appearing from abstract space.
