Lot description

Untitled signed and dated 2013 (lower left) oil on canvas 36" x 48" (91 cm x 122 cm) PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist Known for his appropriation paintings that combine elements of famous art pieces with contemporary pop culture references and socio-political commentary, Ronson Culibrina's painting highlights this exact artistic style as it recontextualizes Fernando Amorsolo's 1939 piece, Rice Harvest, combined with surreal edits of different items and distortions, basically turning the classic piece into a commentary that highlights tension between nostalgic rural romanticism and modern disruption. Using bright, contemporary color interventions that break Amorsolo's idealist realism, Culibrina created a masterpiece that highlights the tension between tradition and modernity. The way Amorsolo's rural scene was used to represent the country's agricultural roots and the hardworking nature of its citizens, and then disrupted by the presence of out-of-place modern items such as industrialized jars, represented the intrusion of consumerism, globalization, and imported culture into local life. The laughing devil sitting on the ground reflects the temptation, corruption, and the mocking spirit of colonial history, which continues to laugh at the persistence of exploitation and inequality in a modernized world.
