Lot description
Untitled signed and dated 1988 (lower left) oil on canvas 36" x 36" (91 cm x 91 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by the heirs of the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot This untitled piece from 1988 bears witness to Florencio Concepcion's ability to evoke a wide array of emotions through his brilliant colorism and delicate brushwork. Instead of using direct objects, his smeared-like, almost wispy brushstrokes and admirable colorwork fill his canvases with vibrant hues that resonate with the viewer, offering a poetic delineation of a subject or scenery. In this piece, he places bright hues at the center, adds black at the top and white below, then carefully blends them with light strokes, careful not to brush off the vibrant ones. This process created a somewhat nightly scenery, wherein the mist slowly engulfs everything. Concepcion's abstraction is a juxtaposition in itself. Despite the burst of colour, they fall on the quieter and more subdued end of Abstract Expressionism. His vibrant hues induce strong emotions in the spectators, revealing their innermost thoughts and feelings. Even so, they possess calming qualities, incorporated from the artist's previous practice of Impressionism, that inexplicably soothe one's emotional turmoil. (Jessica Magno)
