Lot description

Interior View of a Church with Figures, oil on panel, framed, 82 x 120 cm. The scene depicts the monumental interior of a Gothic church, rendered with remarkable mastery of perspective and a refined balance of light. The wide naves, punctuated by pointed arches and clustered pillars, open onto a checkerboard floor, leading the gaze toward the altar at the back, following a scenographic layout of great geometric rigor. Several small figures—a gentleman in a red robe, a woman kneeling in prayer, a cleric—quietly animate the space, accentuating its meditative dimension. The work fits into the genre of the church interior view, typical of early 17th-century Dutch painting, particularly of the Hague School. Bartholomeus van Bassen, architect and painter, was among the protagonists of this production: his architecture is distinguished by linear precision, spatial clarity, and the calibrated use of light, which models surfaces with an almost metaphysical effect. The painting shows clear affinities with van Bassen's views of ecclesiastical interiors from the 1620s to 1630s, due to the purity of the perspective and the atmospheric rendering that combines monumentality and silence. The inclusion of the figures, small in scale but elegant in posture and color, reveals the artist's interest in the human and spiritual dimension of the sacred space, as well as its architecture. C.
