Description EN Portrait of a woman in front of mirror. Probably c. 1919. Oil on canvas. Signed 'Jan Cockx', signature repeated on the reverse. A lady dressed in long black coat with fur collar and hand muff is being portrayed in front of a wall with colourful wallpaper. Her back is partially visible in the mirror behind her, which gives the spectator a glimpse of the entire interior. On the wall opposite her also appears to be a painting of a seated figure. The Antwerp provincial government owns a similar portrait in which art critic Roger van Avermaete (1893-1988) poses in front of an equally colourful wall (oil on canvas, 183 x 126 cm, Province of Antwerp Collection, P/S 229, ill. in P. Pauwels, "Jozef Cantré," 2017, p. 130). His portrait was painted by Jan Cockx in 1919. Possibly the similarities in style, as well as the more or less similar dimensions of the canvas, give an indication of the dating of the portrait of the hitherto unidentified woman wearing a hat. Son dos est partiellement visible dans le miroir qui se trouve derrière elle et qui permet d'apercevoir l'ensemble de l'intérieur. Sur le mur en face d'elle, il semble qu'il y ait également une peinture représentant un personnage assis. Le gouvernement provincial d'Anvers possède un portrait similaire dans lequel le critique d'art Roger van Avermaete (1893-1988) pose devant un mur tout aussi coloré (huile sur toile, 183 x 126 cm, Collection Provincie Antwerpen, P/S 229, ill. dans P. Pauwels, 'Jozef Cantré', 2017, p. 130). Son portrait a été peint par Jan Cockx en 1919. Il est possible que les similitudes de style, ainsi que les dimensions plus ou moins similaires de la toile, donnent une indication sur la datation du portrait de la femme au chapeau jusqu'à présent non identifiée. Het Antwerpse provincie bestuur bezit een gelijkaardig portret waarin kunstcriticus Roger van Avermaete (1893-1988) poseert voor een al even kleurrijke muur (olieverf op doek, 183 x 126 cm, Collectie Provincie Antwerpen, P/S 229, ill. in P. Pauwels, 'Jozef Cantré', 2017, p. 130). Zijn portret schilderde Jan Cockx in 1919. Mogelijk geven de gelijkenissen in stijl, alsook de min of meer gelijke afmetingen van het canvas, een indicatie van de datering van het portret van de tot op heden ongeïdentificeerde vrouw met hoed.
