Lot description

Description EN 'Jérusalem', 1874-76. Oil on canvas. Signed 'Charles Verlat Jeruzalem'. Fine gilt frame mentioning 'Jerusalem'. Charles (Karel) Verlat (Antwerp 1824 - 1890) was initially a pupil of Nicasius De Keyser in his studio in the Vleeshuis. Between 1850 and 1879 he lived and painted, in a fairly realistic style, in Paris, then became head of the Academy of Weimar in Saxony. Between 1874 and 1876 he lived in Jerusalem, exploring the Holy Land and painting Orientalist and Biblical scenes. Back in Antwerp, he became first a teacher and then Head of the Antwerp Academy, a position in which he died in 1890 and had Vincent Van Gogh, among others, as a student. Verlat became especially famous for his brilliant animal painting, in which there is sometimes an element of cruelty, and for Biblical, mythological and especially oriental representations, such as this one in Jerusalem, made on the spot, more specifically at the David Gate, and signed. He won many honors and prizes, including a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair of 1855. His work can still be admired today in the Verlatzaal in the Antwerp Zoo, in the museums of Antwerp, Brussels, Amsterdam, Weimar and elsewhere. Description FR 'Jérusalem', 1874-76. Huile sur toile. Sign. 'Charles Verlat Jeruzalem'.
