Lot description
SCOTT LEIGHTON (AMERICAN, 1849-1898) BARNYARD SCENE WITH CHICKENS AND ROOSTER, oil on canvas, an interior scene with fowl feeding at a dish surrounded by hay, signed lower right. Housed in possibly original gilt frame. Circa 1885. 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" sight, 12 1/2" x 14 1/2" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Auburn, Maine, Scott Leighton (1849-1898) is primarily known for his equine sporting paintings that were reproduced as lithographs by Currier and Ives in the 1880s and made him somewhat of a household name. Some time in the 1890s, however, he appears to have suffered a mental breakdown, leading to his admittance to the MacLean Insane Asylum in Waverly, Massachusetts, where he died in 1898.
