Lot description

ROBERT CARDINAL (CANADIAN-AMERICAN, B.1936) CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS COASTAL LANDSCAPE WITH COTTAGE, oil on canvas, featuring a cottage situated amongst dunes at twilight, titled Richardson House to original gallery receipt, signed lower right. Housed in likely original frame. Circa 1995. 8 5/8" x 11 5/8" sight, 13 1/4" x 16 1/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Montreal, Canada, Robert Cardinal came to the United States in the late 1950s. Settling in Greenwich Village in New York City, Cardinal initially began his artistic studies with Albert Handell (b.1937). It was during this period that he discovered Provincetown, Massachusetts on a spring trip outside of the city and fell in love with Cape Cod. After two years of additional study in Paris, Cardinal returned to the Cape permanently, where he and fellow artist Frank Milby (b.1933) opened a gallery. An avid student of art history, Cardinal has studied nearly every movement and style, but perhaps no single artist has had more impact on his work than Edward Hopper (1882-1967), an important American 20th century figure who also painted on Cape Cod and other New England coastal locations. Like Hopper, Robert Cardinal's works are both Tonalist and minimal, relying on spare detail, strong light, and pronounced shadow, usually anchored by a single solitary structure (or in Hopper's case, often a figure), in order to impart a distinctive mood. The present work, completely fresh to the market and purchased directly from the artist's gallery, does just that by inviting the viewer to witness the stark and solitary beauty of the Cape Cod landscape in all of its isolation and unique majesty.
