Lot description

This beautiful plate is from the art review periodical published by Henry Babou entitled Les Artistes du Livre. The work was published in Paris between 1928 and 1933 by Babou. It was a periodical limited to 700 copies, with each issue dedicated to an artist and the prints on Japanese paper. This plate is from the publication after George Barbier. Babou's Les Artistes du Livre was an important series documenting the contributions of early 20th centuryartists. "The Les artistes du livre collection is a contemporary initiative aimed at preserving a specific artistic heritage, that of illustration, at a time marked by great enthusiasm for illustrated books." (Marie-Charlotte Quin, Relief) George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the greatest French artists of the early 20th century. He first exhibited in 1911 at the age of 29 where he gained many commissions to design costumes and illustrate works, fashion in particular. Barbier led a group nicknamed by Vogue "The Knights of the Bracelet" formed from artists from the Ecole des Beaux Arts and including Monvel, Brissaud, Iribe, Lepape, and Martin. Beyond his illustrations, Barbier created jewelry, glass and wallpaper design.
