Lot description

Signed lower left: Fr Aerni Rom 86 Francesco Teodoro Aerni was born on 19 October 1853 in Aarburg, Switzerland. After studying in Lausanne under Johann Joseph Geißer, he moved to Italy in 1872, where he was a pupil of Adeodato Malatesta at the Academy of Fine Arts in Modena. After moving to Rome, he associated with various German artists living there, in particular Hermann Corrodi, whom he accompanied to Egypt and Cyprus in 1878 and 1879, bringing back various impressions from his travels. This led to an artistic exchange that prompted Corrodi to work in Aerni's studio and assist him with large-format paintings and, above all, with large and small views of the cities of Naples and Rome. The example presented here is an outstanding testimony to this.
