Lot description
Framed under glass In the final years of his life, Rudolf von Alt rarely left his apartment on Skodagasse in Vienna, yet he continued to work steadily and with remarkable artistic vigour until the end. He kept painting all the objects in his immediate surroundings, including his studio with its beautiful Baroque cabinet, floral arrangements, and still lifes, which he depicted repeatedly. Although the watercolour presented here is undated, it can be grouped together with other versions of the studio scene created between 1890 and 1904. Rudolf von Alt himself regarded his vast oeuvre, which concluded with a View into the Studio from 1905, as uncountable. The 1905 watercolour is now held in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich (inv. no. 46901). It shows a fully realised view of the studio, with the exception of a blank white spot where Rudolf von Alt intended to depict himself at his studio table.
