Lot description

Monogrammed lower right: AVDN (ligated) Aert van der Neer skillfully devoted himself to depicting nocturnal landscapes, which are very popular with collectors due to their special appeal. This wood panel depicts a romantic, moonlit canal landscape with a wide bank in the foreground. Beneath the trees on the right is a flat path on which two people—a couple—are strolling at night. On the other side of the bank, trees and farms can be seen. The painting's color palette consists of muted tones, shades of brown, and dark greens, which well reflect the nocturnal surroundings. The work can only have been created after 1650. Finally, two questions must be clarified: the question of the artwork's authenticity and the issue of the identity of the works depicted in the historical sources. It would not be surprising if Wolfgang Schulz had overlooked the identity of the paintings listed under catalog numbers 851 and 1090. Unfortunately, his comprehensive catalogue raisonné also contains further duplicate catalogue numbers referring to the same work of art. If catalogue numbers 851 and 1090 refer to the same work, significant restoration changes were made between 1974 and 1976: two figures appear under the trees in the foreground, and individual reflections on the water's surface were intensified. We thank Armin Stein for supporting information on the question of authenticity.
