Lot description
Fede Galizia was born in 1578 to Nunzio Galizia, painter and miniaturist from Trento. Details about her early life are scarce, but already Gian Paolo Lomazzo described her as “devoting herself to the imitation of our most excellent artists” at the age of twelve; by twenty, Galizia was internationally known and a sought after portrait painter, her works being in demand in part for their pictorial quality and unfiltered naturalism. She also became a pivotal figure for Italian still life genre, merging the Lombard naturalistic tradition and Caravaggio´s use of light. In a surprisingly modern approach to the genre, the Fruits are displayed on a table, observed from above, against a dark backgrounds. The attention focuses on each individual peach and flower; every object is treaded as a whole, individual entity in conversation with the other ones. The present work was first ascribed to the mature output of Fede Galizia by Stefano Bottari (1963 and 1965) and Renato Roli (exh. cat., 1964) and later published by Flavio Caroli (1989), within his monographic publication on the artist.
