Lot description
ANDREW JOHNSON (1808 - 1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Interesting partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Sep. 21, 1867, an authorization for ‘...the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the unconditional pardon of William Lacy…', almost certainly a former Confederate soldier, although research shows a number of officers and men of this name, rendering his exact identity unclear. Johnson signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows some brushing to the ink at ‘Johnson', with mounting remnants to the verso which have bound the two leaves of the letter together, small chips at top right and pencil inscription at bottom left and on the verso, and some mat burn to the edges. In very good condition overall.
