Spence (Joseph). Polymetis, 2nd edition, 1755 Spence (Joseph). Polymetis: Or, An Enquiry concerning the Agreement Between the Works of the Roman Poets, And the Remains of the Antient Artists. Being an attempt to illustrate them mutually from one another, 2nd edition, London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1755, engraved portrait frontispiece, 41 engraved plates, engraved illustrations, some offsetting from plates, contemporary calf gilt, ink splash at foot of lower cover, partial fading to covers, light edge wear, folio QTY: (1) NOTE: ESTC T130824. The text in the form of twenty-one dialogues, provides a history and criticism of Roman sculpture, mythological art, and Latin poetry. Lessing attacked it in his Laokoon (1766), but the work is thought to have provided the poet Keats with the source of some of his mythological imagery.
