Lot description

Charles Rochussen, Dutch 1814-1894- Daniel in the Lion's Den; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed with initials and dated 'CR / 1877' (lower left), 37.5 x 27.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Rochussen trained in The Hague under artists Wijnand Nuijen (1813-1839) and Anthonie Waldorp (1803-1866). The loose, somewhat Impressionistic draughtsmanship of the present drawing, alongside the depiction of figures in historical dress, are features which often characterise Rochussen's output. The composition is particularly dramatic and striking.
