August Jernberg, Swedish 1826-1896- The Conversation; oil on canvas, signed 'A Jernberg' (lower left), 66 x 54.9 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Jernberg studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and later under Thomas Couture (1815-1879) in Paris, before moving to Germany, where he became a member of the Düsseldorf school of painting. The present work is a typical example of Jernberg's closely-observed genre scenes which are evidently informed by the interior scenes pioneered in the 17th-century Netherlands.
