Lot description
Vincenzo Giovannini, Italian 1816/17-1903- View of the Forum, Rome, at sunset; oil on canvas, 34.6 x 56.1 cm. Provenance: Christopher Davidge, Little Houghton, Northants, 2014. Note: This view of the Roman Forum is characteristic of Giovannini's evocative depictions of monumental ruins across the Italian capital, and elsewhere, with compositions which almost reveal a debt to the architectural prints of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). A strikingly similar work by Giovannini, albeit slightly less suffused by the warm red hue of the setting sun which illuminates the present work, sold at Bonhams, London, on 28 October 2009, lot 39 (£20,000 hammer). Another, slightly different view of the Roman Forum also sold at Hampel, Munich, on 22 September 2022, lot 623 (€57,000).
