Lot description
Edwin Lord Weeks, American 1849-1903- Dhows on the Nile; watercolour on paper, signed with initial 'W.' (lower left), 9.8 x 18.8 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: After studying in Paris under Léon Bonnat (1833-1922) and Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), Weeks went on to become one of the most prominent Orientalist painters from America. His scenes were informed by the extensive travels he completed over the course of his career in South America, Egypt, Persia, Morocco, and India. The present work is typical of Weeks's atmospheric watercolours, executed in a muted palette which effectively evokes the soft light of dawn.
