Lot description
Jeremias Wolff, German 1663-1724- Constantinople; engraving, signed 'Hered: Ierem. Wolffij. excude: Aug. Vind' (within the plate, lower right), 35 x 104 cm. Provenance: A distinguished family collection. Note: Originally a maker of clocks and automata, Wolff went on to become the most successful map publisher in Augsburg of his time. The present view is particularly compelling, depicting Constantinople at the height of Ottoman imperial rule in the early 18th century, with the Golden Horn, the main inlet of the Bosphorus, and the historic neighbourhoods of Pera and Galata, now known as Beyoğlu and Karaköy, in the foreground. Twenty-six points of interest are noted in this view, including a number of religious sites, as well as the 'place where the Sultan’s elephants are kept' and the 'citadel for the Sultan’s wise advisors'.
