Edgar E. West, British fl.1857-c.1892- Seascape with waves crashing against a cliff-face; watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and inscribed 'E. E. West / Acton. Green. / Chiswick' (lower left), 77 x 119.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present watercolour is a particularly dramatic composition by West, who produced a number of coastal landscapes in Britain and Norway, around which he travelled widely. This work closely recalls another of his watercolours, of similar dimensions, which sold at Sotheby's & Stephan Welz, Johannesburg, 25 March 1996, lot 75 (£3,362).
