Lot description

John Sell Cotman, British 1782-1842- Study of a group of trees; pencil on paper, bears collector's stamp for William Bateson [L.2604a] verso, bears unidentified blindstamp (lower left), 25.4 x 27.5 cm., (mounted / unframed). Provenance: The collection of William Bateson (1861-1926). Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Cotman was a central member of the Norwich School of artists, having enjoyed the patronage of Dr Thomas Monro (1759-1833), through whom he encountered J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) and Thomas Girtin (1775-1802). The present work recalls a sketch which sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 19 March 2025, lot 77 (£2,898), and another study of a tree, which exhibits the same distinctive hatching visible in the present drawing, which sold at Christie's, London, 5 July 2022, lot 103 (£5,040).
