John Laporte, British 1761-1839- View of a ruin in a lakeside landscape, with two figures by the shore; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'J Laporte 1823' (lower right), 21.6 x 29.5 cm. Provenance: with Bruce Wightman, UK. Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Laporte was born, possibly in London or Ireland, to a French Huguenot family, and studied under the Irish-born Huguenot John Melchior Barralet (1753-1822). He went on to become an influential teacher himself, with his pupils including Dr Thomas Monro (1759-1833), the prominent patron of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851); Thomas Girtin (1775-1802); and Peter de Wint (1784-1849), amongst others. The present work is typical of Laporte's idyllic pastoral scenes. Similar works by the artist include watercolours which sold at Christie's, London, on 2 July 2019, lot 186 (£2,000), and Woolley & Wallis on 8 March 2023, lot 53 ('View of Knole Park in Sevenoaks' £1,100 hammer)
