Johann Christian Klengel,  German 1751-1824-  Cattle watering in a wooded river land auction lot image

Lot description

Johann Christian Klengel, German 1751-1824- Cattle watering in a wooded river landscape; pencil, pen, brown ink, and wash on paper, bears inscription 'Johann Christian Klengel born Kesseldorf 1751' on the reverse of the mount, 21.3 x 29.7 cm., (mounted / unframed). (VAT charged on Hammer Price). Note: Klengel studied at the Academy of Dresden, and started working at the Dresden court in 1773, before becoming a member of the Academy in 1777. The present work is characteristic of the artist's idealised pastoral scenes. Similar works include those which sold at Karl & Faber, Munich, on 25 May 2004, lot 36 (€1,700 hammer) and on 4 December 2008, lot 397 (€1,800 hammer), the former with the same distinctive hatching, and the latter more highly finished.
