Lot description

Maria Gianni (Italian 1873-1956) Orientalist view of the pyramids at Giza and the Nile watercolor and gouache on paper signed lower right 7 x 16" 11 x 20" as framed. Gianni was the eldest daughter of Girolamo Gianni (IT 1837-1895) a Neapolitan painter who later moved to Malta. She was trained by her father and served as his assistant. She is primarily known for her Watercolors and works in gouache. About 70 works by her mostly from the last decade of the 19th c are known to exist. This one is an excellent example of the Orientalist style that was popular in that time period promoting an exaggerated exoticism of the Arab/Middle Eastern world.
