Lot description

Cecil Vezin Grant (Vermont 1880-1953) Winter's Bite oil on board signed lower left 10 x 12" 10.5 x 12.5" as framed. Cecil V. Grant started his career as a stockbroker on Wall Street. After losing his money in the crash of 1929, he moved permanently to a small farmhouse he owned in Londonderry, Vermont. Having been an avocational painter prior to this move, in the 1930s he established his reputation as a popular local artist. Grant supported his family by setting his paintings up on the green across from the Equinox Hotel in Manchester and selling them to tourists and passing motorists on nearby Route 7 (now Route 7A). He painted many potboilers, but Grant’s best paintings hold their own against the many talented painters who lived and worked in the area at the during the same period. Vrest Orton, founder of the Vermont Country Store and the first editor of Vermont Life, wrote "Mr. Grant is not a summer vacationist painter. He lives in Vermont and paints Vermont only as a man who understands her."
