Lot description
Property from a Private Collector, Spring Isand, GA and Philadelphia Description: Emmi Whitehorse (NM. b. 1957), Shallow River (1295), Oil/Chalk/Paper/Canvas, 2001, signed with the artist's symbol 'III' lower right; signed, titled, numbered and dated No. 1295, Shallow River July 2001, Emmi Whitehorse on the reverse. Provenance: purchased Lewallen Contemporary, 129 W. Palace Ave. Santa Fe, NM 87501, 8/7/2001, see scan of invoice. "[Emmi Whitehorse's] paintings tell the story of knowing land over time and being completely, microcosmically within a place. The way the light begins to change when clouds gather in the distance and again as they pass overhead; shadows moving across the land; the colors of a rising or setting sun. All are part of her vast lexicon of symbols. Whitehorse embellishes her large-scale oil paintings with pastel and graphite. She continually reorients them as she works, making distinctions such as "top" and "bottom" virtually irrelevant.' —RoseMary Diaz (Santa Clara Pueblo), Jenn Ackerman and Tim Gruber, Emmi Whitehorse Paints the Harmonies of Her Homelands, National Gallery of Art, July 25, 2024.
