Lot description
(Florence circa 1627 – circa 1707) Saint Peter visiting Saint Agatha, oil on canvas, octagonal, 93 x 78 cm, framed We are grateful to Francesca Baldassari for endorsing the attribution of the present painting. Alessandro Rosi was a pupil of Cesare and Vincenzo Dandini and he developed a distinctive painterly style distinguished by the representation of bold, expressive figures, such as the present works. He was favoured by prominent Florentine patrons, including the Corsini and Rinuccini and executed easel paintings, as well as frescoes, including the celebrated Allegories in the loggia of Palazzo Corsini, Florence. The present pair of octagonal canvases depict Saint Agatha and Saint Christina (see also lot 110), close-up with bold gestures in vivid colour. These are important examples of Rosi’s mature style of painting, using dramatic chiaroscuro to evoke devotional sentiment.
