Lot description

(Vienna 1844–1926 Grafenegg) In the Countryside, signed O. Wisinger-Florian, verso exhibition labels Kunstverein Hamburg no. 105, Berlin Kunstausstellung no. 2628 and Künstlerhaus label, oil on canvas, 60.5 x 74.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Austria. Exhibited: Große Berliner Kunstausstellung, 1899; Kunstverein, Hamburg 1899. Künstlerhaus label 1899, 2763 confirmed by Nikolaus Domes MA We are grateful to Dr Alexander Giese for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original and its inclusion to the Catalogue Raisonneé. Olga Wisinger-Florian, one of the most important female Austrian painters of the late 19th century, was a central representative of Austrian Atmospheric Impressionism and one of the first women to gain lasting recognition in the male-dominated art scene of her time. The present lot, Im Grünen, transports the viewer into lush, summery vegetation. The view opens onto a small garden area enclosed by a wooden fence and old sheds, accessible through a simple wooden gate. A narrow, bright path winds through the greenery in the foreground and leads the eye into the depths of the picture. Exuberant bushes and flowering elderberry, finely differentiated in shades of white and green, fill almost the entire picture surface and reinforce the impression of a dense space overgrown by nature. Here, the artist displays her mastery in the use of colour and light: the rich green of the vegetation is varied in countless nuances, from bright light to almost black depths. White-flowering plants add rhythmic accents. Nature does not appear idealised, but is transferred to the canvas in its immediate, lively abundance. Olga Wisinger-Florian succeeds in capturing the atmospheric density of the place and leading the viewer into a quiet, almost intimate garden world.
