Lot description

Jules Worms (French, 1832-1924) Oil On Board Painting 19th Century, France. Antique French oil painting on board by Jules Worms (French, 1832) depicting a Spanish figurative scene. Signed on the lower left. With ornate gilt gesso frame. Jules Worms (1832–1924) was a French academic painter and illustrator best known for his detailed and colorful genre scenes of Spanish life. Born in Paris, Worms first trained in lithography and illustration before enrolling in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1849. His career took a decisive turn when he began traveling to Spain in the early 1860s. During six extended trips between 1860 and 1882, he became fascinated with Spanish culture and customs, gathering sketches and costumes for his paintings. In 1871, he spent six months in Granada with the Catalan painter Fortuny. Worms' studies of Spanish masters like Diego Velazquez and Francisco Goya also influenced his use of color. He made his debut at the prestigious Paris Salon in 1859 and continued to exhibit there until the 1890s. He won several medals for his work in 1867, 1868, and 1878, and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1876.
