Lot description

Condition: Yellowing & light stain on print Item Description A compelling serigraph print, "The Flute Player," by the renowned and influential Native American artist Woodrow "Woody" Crumbo (Citizen Potawatomi Nation, 1912-1989). This piece is a quintessential example of Crumbo's celebrated style and features one of his most personal and significant subjects. Woody Crumbo was a multifaceted artist, dancer, and musician who dedicated his life to the preservation and celebration of Native American culture. As a leader of the "Bacone School" of art, he developed a distinctive style characterized by dynamic movement, and a focus on the spiritual essence of his subjects. An accomplished flutist himself, Crumbo often returned to the image of the flute player, a figure that embodies the sacred act of creating beauty and harmony. This vintage print captures a solo figure in a rhythmic pose, rendered in Crumbo's signature two-dimensional "flatstyle." The strong lines and bold color fields are hallmarks of his work, which is held in the collections of major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Signature: This print is distinguished by the artist's authentic signature, hand-signed in pencil in the lower margin. Woody Crumbo has also personally inscribed the title, "The Flute Player," and the date, "1970." A genuine, hand-applied signature is a key feature for collectors, adding a personal touch from the artist that is highly valued over prints with only a plate-signed or printed signature. Condition: This is a vintage work of art and is sold as-is. The print exhibits overall age-related toning (yellowing) to the paper and a light stain. Please review all photographs carefully to assess the condition before bidding.
