Lot description

A finely executed etching on paper by American artist Mark Alan Leithauser, titled The Journey Is the Teacher. This black-and-white work showcases Leithauser's characteristic intricacy and imagination, with an otherworldly forest scene brimming with tangled vegetation, symbolic forms, and hidden figures. Two large trees rise prominently at the center, surrounded by thorny undergrowth, seedpods, and surreal humanoid creatures that peek out from between stems and leaves. Known for his mastery of line and texture, Leithauser combines fantastical elements with technical precision in a composition that invites close observation. The piece is rich in allegory, aligning with the title's meditative theme. Signed in pencil on the lower right, with edition number 46/75 at center and title at left, this early print reflects the artist's deep engagement with mythic and natural motifs. Leithauser served as a curator and designer at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and his works are held in major public and private collections.
