Lot description
Original Oil by Italian artist Vincenzo Loria (b. 1849- d. 1939) Born in Salerno, Loria went to Naples and studied under professor Domenico Morelli, painting genre subjects sometimes in oil, but more commonly in watercolor. This is a rare luminous example of one of his oil paintings on panel depicting the evocative ruins of the Temple of Hera (also referred to as the Temple of Poseidon) in Paestum, rendered in warm hues of dusk with the ancient Doric columns dramatically silhouetted against a vibrant sky. The tranquil reflection in the foreground water and the classical serenity of the structure evoke the spirit of the Grand Tour era. The painting is housed in its original, richly ornamented giltwood frame. The panel is faintly signed in the lower right, though the signature is partially obscured. The reverse of the panel bears several period pencil inscriptions, including the name Rev. D. Goodwin, with reference to the famous Hotel des Etrangers in Sicily. Also present is a stamped ID mark referencing V. Loria, Etude de Peintures avec Exposition, Naples. This work fits well within the Italian academic and Grand Tour tradition. Signature on lower right. Issued: 19th century Dimensions: 21"L x 15"H Country of Origin: Italy Provenance: Dr. Robert H. Baer Collection
