Lot description
A powerful limited edition lithograph by Carl Beam, titled Semiotic Intrusion 4. Beam, celebrated as one of the first contemporary Indigenous artists to be included in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, used layered imagery and text to confront colonial narratives and cultural representation. This work juxtaposes a photographic reproduction of Edward S. Curtis's Portraits of Native Americans with Christian missionary text, marked boldly with the phrase Semiotic Intrusion 4. Through this thought-provoking composition, Beam challenges imposed histories while reasserting Indigenous presence and voice. This lithograph exemplifies Beam's distinctive use of collage, symbolism, and historical reference to provoke dialogue about identity and cultural survival. Hand-signed by the artist and numbered 19/300. Artist: Carl Beam (Canadian 1943-2005) Issued: c. 1990 Dimensions: 12"L x 16"H Edition Number: 19 of 300 Country of Origin: Canada
