Lot description
(Wittenberg), 1542. (Hans Lufft ny.) (168)p. The original author, Ricoldo da Monte di Croce (appearing on the title page as Bruder Richard), was an Italian Dominican friar at the turn of the 13th–14th centuries. After travelling through the Holy Land in the late 13th century, he composed Contra legem Sarracenorum, a polemical treatise warning against the threat of Islam and the Ottomans. The work was translated into several languages and later substantially reworked by Martin Luther. This Wittenberg edition is among the best-known Reformation adaptations; another appeared the same year in Augsburg. German bibliographies record at least two variants, chiefly differing in the date on the title page. Modern leather. VD16 R 2330.; Benzing: 3405.; BNH Cat L 790.
