James Kivetoruk Moses Inupiat, 1903-1982 Pencil and watercolor Signed "Kivetoruk Moses - Nome Alaska" lower left. Hunter in a kayak bringing in a seal, framed. James Kivetoruk Moses was born in 1903 in Cape Espenberg, Alaska. The first half of his life was spent as a subsistence hunter, but after a debilitating airplane crash in 1953 left him unable to continue hunting, Moses turned to life as an artist. Inspired by life in the region, he used a variety of media, primarily ink, watercolor, or oil-based pencil on paper or poster board. A self-taught artist, his style was realistic, and skillful shading gave a sense of depth to his work praised by collector. Today his work can be found at the California Academy of Sciences, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the University of Alaska Museum in Fairbanks, and the Alaska State Museum in Juneau, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City as well as numerous private collections throughout the United States.
