road in the wood sgn. l.l. E M Bannister oil/artist board; 6.5 by 9.5 in.; framed 7 by 10 in. Bannister was born in New Brunswick, Canada, and died Providence RI. Bannister became a sensation when one of his paintings won first prize at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. He was a painter of the American Barbizon school.
