Lot description
A striking and architectural composition by Cuban artist Humberto Calzada, this mixed media work on paper board with gouache and oil captures the vibrant geometry, bold color contrasts, and architectural elegance for which the artist is celebrated. Calzada, born in Havana, Cuba, and later establishing his career in the United States, is renowned for his exploration of Cuban identity, memory, and cultural heritage through depictions of architecture, particularly colonial facades and interiors. His works often merge realism with abstraction, using doorways, windows, arches, and stairways as symbolic gateways between past and present. This piece, with its rich interplay of reds, blues, blacks, and whites, conveys both nostalgia and modernity, making it a commanding example of his celebrated style. Calzada's paintings have been exhibited internationally and are included in numerous public and private collections, positioning him as one of the most significant Cuban artists of his generation.
