Lot description
A large and important original winter landscape oil painting on moose quarter inch thick moose hide by Inupiaq artist George Ahgupuk's (1911-2001), marked for "moose skin" lower left corner. Relying on an expressive impressionist-inspired technique for applying paint, the painting depicts a snow-laden environment that embodies the Alaskan rural landsacpe, with a bright but frozen horizon receding beyond the spruce trees and into distant mountains. As early as 1937, George Ahgupuk's (Inupiaq, 1911-2001) artistic skills were recognized by no less an authority than famed artist and illustrator Rockwell Kent (American, 1882-1971). As a result, the prestigious American Artists Group in New York elected Ahgupuk a full member and shipped him pens, ink, and other drawing supplies. Ahgupuk's work has been widely shown in exhibitions throughout Alaska and the western United States as well as in New York, and his work is represented in museums within and outside the state. Measures approximately 12" x 23.75".
