Provenienz: Sammlung Siegfried Wisotzky. The company AG vormals F. Martini & Co. traces its origins to engineer Friedrich von Martini, who founded a machinery factory in Frauenfeld (Canton Thurgau) in 1860. Initially producing bookbinding and textile machines, the company shifted to rifle production in 1869. In 1897, his sons Adolph and Max von Martini converted the business into a joint-stock company and began manufacturing automobiles. Known for their speed and reliability, Martini cars soon gained international popularity - even reaching New Zealand and Egypt. In 1903, a modern factory was built in Saint-Blaise near Neuchâtel, including a factory settlement that still exists today. Despite technical achievements and record-breaking publicity stunts, the company soon faced financial difficulties. After several changes in ownership, Walther Steiger took over technical management in 1926 and introduced the “Martini-Six,” a touring limousine with servo brakes and electric starter. However, commercial success remained elusive. Even the licensed production of the German Wanderer W 11 from 1930 to 1932 could not reverse the decline. On June 12, 1934, the factory closed permanently. With approximately 3,500 vehicles built, Martini was Switzerland’s most important and successful passenger car manufacturer of its time.
