Lot description
Philip Jean (British, 1755-1802) Portrait miniature of an officer, presumably retired, in pre-c.1768 uniform of either the Royal or HEIC Artillery signed and dated lower left 'Jean / 1782' inscribed in later hand on a label to the reverse 'J. P. Larkins Esq. / Hon.ble E. I. C. S.' watercolour on ivory 3.5 x 3cm Provenance: Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 25th June 1997, lot 81, as of 'Captain John Pascal Larkins of the East India Company', A Single-Owner Collection of Portrait Miniatures, Part I (lots 264-328) The sitter in the present miniature wears the pre-c.1768 uniform of an officer in either the Royal Artillery, or perhaps the Artillery service of one of the Honorauble East India Company presidencies. He cannot therefore be John Pascal Larkins who was a Captain of a merchant vessel in the East India Company, as previously identified.
