Lot description

Francis Jukes (British, 1745-1812) after John Cleveley Views in the South Seas to include 'A View of Moorea', 'A View of Huaheine' and 'A View of Matavai Bay' three hand-coloured aquatints (from the set of four), published by J. Martyn, London, 1787-8, each with printed descriptions to margins Pl. 43 x 60cm (3) John Cleveley's four views are believed to derive from drawings taken on the spot by his brother James Cleveley, carpenter on the Resolution during Captain Cook's third voyage. The view of Matavai, Tahiti, is incorrectly titled View of Charlotte Sound in New Zealand. The fourth and final view, missing from the present lot, depicts the death of Cook in Hawaii.
