Lot description

Untitled signed and dated 2014 (lower left) oil on canvas 30" x 24" (76 cm x 61 cm) Blending classical European portraiture with contemporary surrealism, Jason Montinola's portrait exemplifies his excellence in creating his signature surreal and haunted portraits, which are drawn from visions and dreams, evoking a musical gothic aura by incorporating classical influences to explore deeper themes beyond language. The subject, adorned with a theatrical white ruff collar, emerges from darkness with a face that appears both mask-like and mysteriously animate—a signature element in Montinola's visual language. The meticulously rendered portrait employs traditional oil techniques while subverting classical expectations through subtle distortions. Montinola's dark palette gives reference to old European portraiture. At the same time, the uncanny alterations invite viewers to question perceptions of identity and reality, transforming a conventional portraiture into a psychologically complex meditation regarding the human condition.
