Lot description

Untitled (Pillow Series) signed (upper left and lower right) dated 1969 acrylic and lead on paper 22" x 30 3/4" (56 cm x 78 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Mrs. Carmen R. Mesina, sister of the artist, confirming the authenticity of this lot Being the Father of Philippine Conceptual Art, Roberto Chabet's featured piece is a good example of his popular minimalist yet highly conceptual approach to art. The piece involves a depiction of multilayered irregular geometric forms, with a shade of blue and red creating a strong tension contrast between cool and warm colors contained intensely inside the canvas. Just like his other pieces, Chabet often explores the tension between order and chaos. With the irregularity within the geometrical shapes, yet seemingly placed in a precise intended position, it creates a tension of balance between control and spontaneity. And with the piece representing connections and numerous contrasts in place of a literal subject, Chabet invites the viewers to arrive at their own conclusions, as the artist believes that meaning often depends on how the piece activates the space and their perception, not in a secret narrative that the artist had placed.
