Lot description

The Dragon Economy signed and dated 2007 (lower left) oil on canvas 61" x 44" (155 cm x 112 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Osage Gallery LITERATURE Flores, Patrick D. and Jonathan Thomson. Charlie Co: Possessions. Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title at Osage Gallery. Hong Kong: Osage Gallery, 2007. Full-color illustration and painting description on page 52. EXHIBITED Osage Gallery, Charlie Co: Possessions, Hong Kong, 6 June - 15 July 2007 Osage Beijing, Charlie Co: Beijing Residency Exhibition, Beijing, China, 2007 This piece from Charlie Co represents his view about China's rapid rise to power and global influence in the political, economic, and cultural spheres, in exchange for environmental degradation, the lack of democratic rights, and the freedom of expression of its citizens. The illustration depicts a barren industrial wasteland with towering chimneys that belch choking smog, featuring figures that represent several Chinese references, such as the red dragon and the red star, which are the traditional symbols of the nation. Charlie Co's The Dragon Economy highlights not only the artist's but also the West's concern for China's rapid expansion and its costs. (Mark John Castañeda)
