Egill Jacobsen, Danish 1910-1998 - Roo Dobbel Maske, 1974; oil on canvas, signed with initials and dated on the reverse 'E. J. 1974' and inscribed on the reverse of the stretcher 'Roo Dobbel Maske 1974', 92.5 x 65.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Galerie Moderne, Silkeborg (gallery stamp to the reverse of the stretcher); Private Collection Note: Jacobsen was one of the most important artists working in Post-War Denmark, and was a central member of the CoBrA artists that operated between Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam that formed in 1948. Earlier in his career, alongside other Danish artists Else Alfelt, Asger Jorn, and Carl-Henning Pedersen, Jacobsen had founded the Modernist Linien (‘the Line’) group in 1937. The motif of the mask became central to Jacobsen's mature work, acting as a timeless evocation of the human experience. The mask can be simultaneously blank and highly expressive, offering a vessel for the artist to explore with endlessly inventive results. Central to the work is a strong sense of rhythm and firm structure, created through the repeated form of the mask and elliptical mark making. A similar work 'Composition in Red, 1948' is now in the Tate Collection.
