Lot description

Denis Wirth-Miller, British 1915–2010 - Landscape; oil on canvas, signed and titled to the reverse of the stretcher 'Denis Wirth Miller Landscape', 76.5 x 92 cm (ARR) Note: Wirth-Miller is perhaps most widely known for his turbulent friendship with Francis Bacon, reflected in the works he made of animals and isolated figures during the 1950s. The present work reflects his mature career, creating energetic, yet landscapes. His work was recently the focus of a major show at Firstsite, Colchester in 2023 and his life with his partner was also the focus of the book 'The Visitors' Book: In Francis Bacon's Shadow: The Lives of Richard Chopping and Denis Wirth-Miller' by Jon Lys Turner in 2016. Works by the artist are now in the collections of the Yale Art Centre, the Government Art Collection and The Hepworth Wakefield.
